J and L edits

As you may have noticed in the previous blog the term J edits was used. J and L edits are a simple way to make the video flow better. The edits are used quite frequently in all high level video production. They are used when you have b-roll media that could match up with the dialogue in the interview. It is helpful if you watch my  two latest interviews, because in the first there was no b-roll so there were no J and L edits.

Above is a screenshot Adobe premier. In purple and  blue in the top row is my media that corresponds to the dialogue in the interview. Just below that is the video from the interview. The audio is next, followed by the audio from the b-roll ( nat sound).

Here is how to do it: To make J and L edits you must first unlink the interview's audio and video. Second you insert your voice over or music. Lastly you move the video back and place the b-roll in its place above.
**TIP** If there is ANY difference in background noise between the interview's audio and the voice over, such as crickets or wind,  you have to fade the audio. To do this you have to get the pen tool and select near the end of the audio clip and at the end and pull down. This prevents the video from having sudden jolts of noise.
